Live CD Help

Background Info

EDU-Nix is a Live CD, this means that it is a complete computer Operating System that runs off of a Compact Disc instead of being installed onto the computer's hard drive. In order to boot from CD, your computer must be set to do so in the BIOS.

Entering Boot Menu on Startup

not all PCs support this option, but it is the easiest and requires no BIOS changes

Many computers are already set to boot from CD from the start, and most modern computers actually have an option when they start to enter a "Boot Menu" on startup.

If your PC has this Boot Menu option, press the appropriate key to enter the Boot Menu, insert the EDU-Nix CD-ROM and then choose your CD-ROM drive from the Boot Menu list.

Dell
When the Dell screen appears on startup, press F12 to enter the boot menu. Choose your CD-ROM drive and press Enter.
Compaq
When the Compaq screen appears on startup, press ESC to enter the boot menu. Choose your CD-ROM drive and press Enter.

For other PC and BIOS manufacturers, here is an exhaustive resource on BIOS key combinations.

Follow These Steps to Start the EDU-Nix Live CD Environment

for PCs that do not have a boot menu option

  1. First, just try it. Many PCs are already configured to boot from CD before the Hard Drive, if this is so the CD will boot.
  2. If the CD-ROM did not start, reboot the computer. Early on in the boot process, you will see a message indicating which key to enter Setup (often ESC, DEL, or one of the Function Keys (F1-F12).
  3. Enter Setup and find the Boot Sequence settings area. You want to reorder the devices so that the CD-ROM is before the Hard Drive.
  4. Save Settings and Reboot.
